In 1952, Willy Breitling created a wristwatch chronograph with a circular slide rule designed to assist pilots with essential flight calculations. By 1954, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) had endorsed the design as its official watch. This marked the inception of the "navigation timer," or Navitimer. The AOPA, the world's largest pilots' club, included nearly every American pilot in its membership. The Navitimer, the quintessential pilot's watch during the heyday of commercial aviation, was favored by both airline captains and aviation aficionados. It even journeyed into space on astronaut Scott Carpenter's wrist in 1962. The watch's compelling design also attracted non-pilots, including celebrities like Miles Davis and Serge Gainsbourg, showcasing the Navitimer's blend of style and utility.
